Carlo Vistoli
Carlo Vistoli has reached the firmament of countertenors on the world's greatest stages through the warm beauty of his timbre and his technical resources, which allow him to build complete psychological portraits of the characters he inhabits.
He has conquered the most prestigious international venues: La Scala Milan, the Opera di Roma, La Fenice Venice, Maggio Fiorentino Florence, the Teatro Regio Turin, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and the Philharmonie de Paris, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Wiener Staatsoper and the Theater an der Wien, the Staatsoper and Philharmonie Berlin, the Auditorio de Madrid, the Palau de la Música Barcelona, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Salzburg Festival, the San Francisco Opera, and more.
He has sung under the baton of the greatest conductors, including William Christie, Philippe Jaroussky, Emmanuelle Haïm, Giovanni Antonini, Ottavio Dantone, Gianluca Capuano, Andrea Marcon, Thibault Noally, Marc Minkowski, Jean-Christophe Spinosi, Raphaël Pichon, Diego Fasolis, John Eliot Gardiner and Christopher Moulds, in productions staged by Damiano Michieletto, Robert Carsen, Oliver Mears, Barrie Kosky, Davide Livermore, Jan Lauwers and Christopher Alden, among others.
Built on these prestigious collaborations, he has set benchmarks in celebrated works while also doing justice to lesser-known scores. Handel and Vivaldi naturally lie at the heart of his repertoire. For Handel, he magnificently serves the title roles of Rinaldo (Lausanne, Paris and Madrid) and Giulio Cesare (Monaco, Paris, Vienna, Salzburg and Zurich), Ruggiero in Alcina (Florence, Rome, as well as an extensive European concert tour conducted by Philippe Jaroussky), Arsace in Partenope (San Francisco), and Athamas in Semele (Berlin, Rome, Paris and London). He brings equal brilliance to the great oratorios, including Messiah and Il Trionfo del Tempo. In Vivaldi, he has made a powerful impression in Orlando furioso, both in the title role (Paris) and as Ruggiero (Venice).
Also worthy of mention is his participation in the recording (Erato-Warner Classics) and subsequent tour of Hasse's Serpentes Ignei in Deserto with Les Accents (Berlin, Madrid), as well as Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, which he sang last season with Emmanuelle Haïm on a major European tour.
His masterly command of text makes him an ideal interpreter of seventeenth-century Italian music. In Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea, he has sung both Ottone (Salzburg) and Nerone (Berlin). His spectacular portrayals of Angelo Custode in Cavalieri's La Rappresentatione di Anima e di Corpo (Vienna) and Alidoro in Cesti's L'Orontea (Milan) were met with unanimous critical acclaim.
In later repertoire, beyond Farnace in Mozart's Mitridate in Berlin, Carlo Vistoli has forged a special bond with the title role of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, which he has brought to life in three major productions (Damiano Michieletto in Berlin, Robert Carsen in Rome and Valencia, Shirin Neshat in Parma). He has also performed Rossini's Petite Messe solennelle to great acclaim in Paris, and has made his first staged Rossini role debut in Rome with the iconic title role of Tancredi. Contemporary creation has occupied an important place in recent seasons: Sciarrino's Luci mie traditrici (Venice) and, more recently, Filidei's Il Nome della Rosa (Milan).
The 2026/2027 season is firmly under the sign of Handel: a major tour of Handel's Messiah with Le Concert d'Astrée in Paris, Barcelona, Madrid and Lyon, followed by Los Angeles; no fewer than two staged productions of Rinaldo (title role), at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées (conducted by Philippe Jaroussky, staged by Valentina Carrasco) and at the Theater an der Wien (Francesco Corti and Nadja Loschky). Carlo Vistoli will also sing Pergolesi's Stabat Mater in Salzburg once again with Emmanuelle Haïm, the role of Ottone in L'Incoronazione di Poppea at the Staatsoper Berlin (Diego Fasolis and Eva-Maria Höckmayr), and Rossini's Petite Messe solennelle at the Opera di Roma (Michele Mariotti). He will also give his first piano recital in the United States at the Park Avenue Armory in New York, alongside Giulio Zappa.
Carlo Vistoli has already built a considerable discography for several labels, among them Harmonia Mundi, Brilliant Classics, Tactus, Arcana, La Musica and Bongiovanni. His most recent album, Sacro furore, with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and dedicated to Vivaldi's sacred music, was released on Harmonia Mundi, and his next recording, Handel's Italians, is due for release in autumn 2026.
