A recipient of Yale University’s Aldo Parisot Prize for gifted cellists who show great promise for a concert career, Jakob Giovanni Taylor is hailed as an “outstanding cellist with a gloriously expressive sound, fearless technique, and an innate musical sensibility.” Born and raised in New York City, Jakob began playing the cello at the age of three. His dedication to sharing music with people from all walks of life has led him to engagements around the globe.

As a soloist, Jakob has performed at venues including Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Bargemusic, Bennett Gordon Hall, Jordan Hall, and Woolsey Hall. He performed with the Yale Philharmonia under the baton of Leonard Slatkin as the winner of the 2022 Yale School of Music Woolsey Hall Concerto Competition. He is also the winner of the 2025 Mika Hasler Competition and the 2020 Shepherd School of Music Concerto Competition.

Jakob’s deep passion for chamber music has allowed him to collaborate with artists including Stefan Jackiw, Benjamin Beilman, Robert McDonald, Wu Han, Ani Kavafian, Ettore Causa, Marcy Rosen, Steven Tenenbom, and Matthew Lipman at festivals such as La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest, Music@Menlo, the Ravinia Steans Institute, the Four Seasons Spring Workshop, the Taos School of Music, and the Music Academy of the West, among others.

Recognizing the importance of new music, he has premiered works by composers including Joel Thompson, Paul Cantelon, and Paul D. Miller, and has worked closely with composers such as Caroline Shaw and Timo Andres.

An avid advocate for music education, Jakob has worked as an educator with institutions including Yale University, the Boston Philharmonic, the New York Youth Symphony, and the Lighthouse School for the Blind.

In 2025, to further his lifelong ambition of inspiring broader public engagement with classical music, Jakob created Politics & Prokofiev, an innovative chamber music series in New York City that fosters vibrant, intimate concert experiences. Each event encourages meaningful social engagement with classical music, captivates a younger audience, and sparks ongoing conversation about the arts.

A graduate of the Yale School of Music, where he earned his Master of Musical Arts under Paul Watkins of the Emerson Quartet, Jakob also received his Master of Music from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, where he studied with Desmond Hoebig, and his Bachelor of Music from the New England Conservatory, where he studied with Paul Katz. He is currently completing his Artist Diploma at the Colburn School under the guidance of Clive Greensmith.
